Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller (German: [ˈniːmœlɐ]; 14 January 1892 – 6 March 1984) was a German theologian and Lutheran pastor. He is best known for his opposition to the Nazi regime during the 1930s, and for a widely quoted statement which he made in different versions, one of which begins "First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Communist," and concludes, "Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me."
