United States, Artist July 22, 1929 – April, 5, 2005.
Neil Gavin Welliver was an American-born modern artist, best known for his large-scale landscape paintings inspired by the deep woods near his home in Maine.
We're antithetical. You use your mind one way; I use mine another. I recognize what you're doing, but I can't imagine it.
Every painting is a war. You have to struggle every day, and to struggle every day with your inadequacies is a damn nuisance.
Doubt is a central factor all the time. There's always the doubt: What the hell am I doing out here in the middle of the woods, all alone, painting?
I paint very directly. I go from top to bottom. When I get to the floor, the painting is finished.
