This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the industrial revolution. That will not happen overnight and it will not happen at a single conference on climate change, be it COP 15, 21, 40 - you choose the number. It just does not occur like that. It is a process, because of the depth of the transformation.

Tesla is certainly opening up very, very new ground but Tesla, as we all know, is not exactly the peoples' vehicle.
Christiana Figueres
-
If the people's vehicle says we are going to make it accessible to everybody to get a (zero-emissions) car, we have a little revolution on the way, the people's vehicle.
Christiana Figueres -
Although it has become longer, countries are now fully aware of each other's positions.

The record-breaking extreme weather events causing chaos across the globe should be a wake-up call. The transition to a low-carbon economy will be much more painful if we wait until there is a climate crisis before recognising that more than half of the world's fossil fuel reserves will have to remain in the ground.

Pope Francis is personally committed to this issue like no other pope before him.
Christiana Figueres -
I would call on you to devote urgent attention to scaling this action up and look forward to learning about progress later in the year.
Christiana Figueres -
We have to get to the point where each individual, each corporation, each community chooses low carbon, because it makes fundamental sense. It should become a no-brainer.
Christiana Figueres
-
Quite frankly, there is no answer to climate change without substantially, dramatically, increasing the amount of renewable energy in the global energy system.
Christiana Figueres -
It brings some light into what is otherwise a very dark box.
Christiana Figueres -
The bottom line (is that) this is an agreement and a path that is protective of growth and development rather than threatening to growth and development.
Christiana Figueres -
Second, I believe in human ingenuity – that when we decide on a task to be done, no matter how daunting it may seem at the beginning, we are able to unleash human ingenuity and human innovative capacity that was unknown, and takes us to a solution.
Christiana Figueres -
We will move to a low-carbon world because nature will force us, or because policy will guide us. If we wait until nature forces us, the cost will be astronomical.
Christiana Figueres -
(Many have said) we need a carbon price and (investment) would be so much easier with a carbon price, but life is much more complex than that, i agree it would be more simple ... but it's not quite what we will have.

When you have a vision of where you need to go, it sounds utopian. But when you get to the tipping point, your understanding switches.
Christiana Figueres -
Paris is not the final destination. It is, if anything, the departing station.
Christiana Figueres -
We cannot ask others to do what we have not done ourselves.
Christiana Figueres -
We are just about to cross the 400 parts per million threshold.
Christiana Figueres -
The United States is actually playing catch up to China.
Christiana Figueres -
No architect should design buildings that import a huge amount of energy.
Christiana Figueres

I see a growing consensus that $100 billion will be the floor and not the ceiling.
Christiana Figueres -
You don't run a marathon with one step.
Christiana Figueres -
Even if you do have a punitive system, that doesn't guarantee that it is going to be imposed or would lead to any better action.
Christiana Figueres -
This clarion call should guide the world towards a strong and durable universal climate agreement in Paris at the end of this year.
