Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979, by vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno. They got a major breakthrough in Sweden in 1982 by winning the televised competition "Rock-SM" (Swedish Rock Championships): it was the first time this competition was held, and Europe became a larger success than the competition itself.

I had a girlfriend (Marita Isaksen) when Europe had the international breakthrough and if there is something I regret, it's not being fair with her and playing it straight. There were a lot of girls on the side. Finally we went separate ways, but we found each other again, and today we have three children.

I have a theory - if the music is good and you have good musicians, the name doesn't matter that much. There are a lot of examples of that. The name is just a calling card.
