Leadership is not about forcing your will on others. It's about mastering the art of letting go.

I'm not going to weigh in on that one. I think that water is a little deep. I think that he measures himself against a season. I've always given him credit for that and he knows what the end-goal is. He's got a tremendous amount of pride and I anticipate that's a process that he's going through. He'll be there when playoffs are going and he'll probably be at his peak at that time.

Von has a lot of game. He is an aggressive player, but sometimes it is good to have a wild horse out there who can push guys and challenge people.
Phil Jackson
-
He looks like he's injured to me. Except for that dunk, he didn't seem to play with as much vim and vigor.
Phil Jackson
-
We can't feel sorry for ourselves. That's the great thing about basketball, you have to go out there and play another game. We're just going to have to bounce back.
Phil Jackson

I was very disappointed with the road trip. We had players injured and our team was not competing as hard as it could. The injuries hurt our team morale.
Phil Jackson
-
I don't feel like we missed an opportunity. We'll have better opportunities as we go along. We're figuring out how to play against them.
Phil Jackson

We remind our players that this is something that was a special night in a heated situation but it's not going to be a steady diet for us. The onus on Kobe is to stay inside the team offense. The onus on the players is to pick it up a little bit better.

My philosophy is that you don't motivate players with speeches; you have motivated players that you draft. That's where they come in, and those are the guys that are competitive. You can not teach competitiveness.

He started when he was 17. It's great, but it's not the stuff I care about. It's something he'll look back on some day and say, 'That's remarkable.

I didn't think he had good legs. He told me in the fourth quarter he was going to get hot, that he felt like he was getting in his rhythm, and he hit in a few in the fourth quarter. But, he was really bothered by Bell. He did a great job on him.

Kwame did a great job in a lot of aspects of the game.

My parents were, had a marriage of passion, and the passion was about their religious beliefs. They were both immigrant families that - well, my father's family came as Puritans to Massachusetts.

It's not exactly the way you want to have a team win a game, but when you have to win a game, it's great to have that weapon to be able to do that.
Phil Jackson

He was unusual in the fact that he was also an excellent (math) teacher. In those days, most coaches taught P.E.
Phil Jackson

That's not what basketball is about. Basketball is about playing as a team and finding a functioning level.
Phil Jackson

There's a process teams go through to put themselves in a competitive place. And when they get to that position, I felt like if they want me to coach that team, I'd have to listen to them, because of my connections in New York and my connections as a Knick.
Phil Jackson

It means something to the fans; it's territorial bragging rights for them.
Phil Jackson

They came out to play Kobe really tough, a little bit harder I think than the referees wanted to see happen. I think in the process of coming out to play hard they crossed the line a little bit.
Phil Jackson

We'd rather have Steve being the guy that's taking the shots and making the points than having a bunch of guys get 20 points or 15 points a game.
Phil Jackson
-
With our team, we're still learning what's a good enough lead. We didn't use the clock wisely and they made some big plays.
Phil Jackson
-
We're not amazed, to say the least. We are enthralled by it, and it's a beautiful thing to see, but it's something that we've grown accustomed to over the years.
Phil Jackson
-
You saw the apparent schizophrenia of these teams. They play great for a while and then they have trouble operating. What you see is young teams learning to play a consistent game. No quality in the direction of their discipline.

We played about as well as we played all season. They had back-to-back games like we did, but you could see their legs getting tired. I had a suspicion that we could win this game tonight, but they played above my expectations.
