Anne Shirley was an American actress. Beginning her career as a child actress under the stage name Dawn O'Day, Shirley adopted the name of the character she played in the film adaptation of Anne of Green Gables in 1934, and achieved a successful career in supporting roles. Among her films is Stella Dallas (1937), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

I realized how much she dedicated her life to making me a somebody . . . Because of this, I'm very proud I did what I did. What I eventually became justified my mother's hard work, dedication and sacrifices. So, although I was propelled and pushed toward a life on camera, because of the pride and happiness my mother felt, I was happy too . . . for a while.
