Elizabeth Carter was an English poet, classicist, writer, translator, linguist, and polymath. As one of the Bluestocking Circle that surrounded Elizabeth Montagu. she earned respect for the first English translation of the Discourses of Epictetus, the 2nd-century Stoic philosopher.
