Gawain Garth Fagan, CD is a Jamaican modern dance choreographer. He is the founder and artistic director of Garth Fagan Dance, a modern dance company based in Rochester, New York.
Afro-Caribbean influences are in me as a creative being the same way Spanish influences were in Picasso's work. I think the notion of labels - "black dancer, black choreographer" -is a ploy to divide and conquer, and to limit.
For youngsters to see just modern or ballet or hip-hop is wrong. I want them to see a rich variety.
Until you have seen a herd of elephants, until you've see gazelles leap together, you can't imagine the beauty.
