The derision comes from snobbery, which I think is the worst thing for art and music. I don't think there's any place for it and it comes from insecurity.
When I was younger, I did a TV show in the U.K. for a couple years, and I learned a lot from that. It taught me a lot about being known amongst your peers and having to deal with a lot of derision from them.
Shame can kill the imagination. It's hard to keep writing in the face of cultural derision.
