Players Quotes

There is far more sensitivity in acoustic guitar players than could ever be compared to any synthesizer. That's a personal point of view but that's the way I see it. I think that's what it's all about. The drive, the fire, the passion - it all comes out on the guitar.

Some people tell me that we professional players are soccer slaves. Well, if this is slavery, give me a life sentence.

The quality of players - the likes of Sam Tomkins, Rangi Chase and Lee Briers - bring an X-factor to the game. It's highly entertaining and it's something probably that the Australian game lacks a bit.

Of course, I was there eight years. Seven of the eight years, we had a team. A team. You know what I mean by team? A team. I think when you go through so many players and changes, that tends to drift away a little bit.

That's very important for us. We need to hit some of those guys. We put a lot of emphasis on who will still be there at (Rounds) 5, 6 and 7.

Once you have a plan, you must sell it to the players. It is not enough to put it on the blackboard and say, 'Okay, here it is.' You have to convince the players that the plan is a good one and show them, in specific ways, why it will work. If you do, you send them out to the practice field with more confidence.

We have found that players like communicating via their digital devices. So with the help of our technology partner, we came up with an app that allows us to send short clips of analysis to individual players or groups of players from different parts of the team. Every player gets a couple of examples of him doing things well and badly straight after the game. They can look at it on their own time and also check their performance data. That's much more useful than showing a 90-minute video tape, as they used to in my time.

Coach Tom Landry, I don't know how to describe him. You can't say enough good things about him. One word to describe him would be fair. He didn't play favorites. He told you what you needed to do to play. If you did that, you'd get to play. If you didn't do that, somebody else would. After I retired, my wife and I went in a restaurant. Coach Landry and his wife were in there. He said, "Walt, come over, sit down.” We sat down and visited. I said, "Coach, you've said more to me tonight than you've said in nine years.” He said, "Walt, you just can't get close to players when you coach. If you get to be friends with the players, then it might alter your judgment in what's best for the team. You might find yourself playing favorites.” And he never did, which I always respected him for that.
