A Muslim has five duties towards another Muslim; to return a salutation, visit the sick, follow funerals, accept an invitation and say 'God have mercy on you' when one sneezes.
The Prophet (saw) said, Those who are nearest to Allah are they who are first to give a salutation (salams).
Love is the salutation of the angel to the stars.
Email is very informal, a memo. But I find that not signing off or not having a salutation bothers me.
