I've always found that when you're trying to create illusions with sound, especially in a science fiction or fantasy movie, that pulling sounds from the world around us is a great way to cement that illusion because you can go out and record an elevator in George Lucas's house or something, and it will have that motor sound.

I am really into how words sound out loud, so I was always the kid who would, like, read the page of the book to herself in her room over and over and over. And Raymond Carver is great for that. Tobias Wolff is an author who is really good for that as well.

I’ve always though of music as a physical thing, but the actual act of creating thick, LOUD and pretty pieces of sound through PA systems really made me lose my shit and realize that there was something pretty amazing about having music completely wash over you and stop you from thinking about anything else.

When we first started, in the early eighties, we had some crappy guitars - Japanese knockoffs that wouldn't hold standard tuning. Later, we'd shove drumsticks or screwdrivers under strings to scheme new noises, sure. But initially, open tuning was a technique used to make our cheap guitars sound better. It wasn't academic or conceptual.

When Derek Miller and I started working together, we had a very clear vision for the sound of the band. It was one which combined our favorite musical elements: driving guitars, bombastic beats, and female vocals. We've always been interested in making music that is essentially pop but that steps outside of the traditional formula into a stranger, more abrasive world. We love that our music makes people dance with complete abandon and feel empowered. It's very uninhibited music, and that's what makes it so fun.

I mostly used the studio devices, because I knew what they had. Generally I find I'm happy to use whatever's around. If there's nothing there I'll make something. For example, one of the things I tried doing was getting a tiny loudspeaker and feeding the instruments off the tape through this tiny speaker and then through this huge long plastic tube - about 50 feet long - that they used to clean out the swimming pool in the place where I was staying. You get this really hollow, cavernous, weird sound, a very nice sound. We didn't use it finally, but nonetheless we well could have.
Brian Eno Roxy Music
