My school music teacher, Al Bennest, introduced me to jazz by playing Louis Armstrong's record of "West End Blues" for me. I found more jazz on the radio, and began looking for records. My paper route money, and later, money I earned working after school in a print shop and a butcher shop went toward buying jazz records. For us, we were a "live" band making music that was basically "live" music. There was no need for us to do it longer. We were ready to make a record. And we play and sing at the same time. We didn't do a lot of overdubs. Berton played his lead guitar part. We can play, that's the other thing. The band is actually fairly competent on their instruments.
